Congratulations! You’re engaged! Stumped on what to wear for your upcoming engagement session with your wedding photographer? Don’t stress! As a wedding and engagement photographer (and recovering shopaholic), I’m giving  8 Tips on What to wear for your Engagement Session. I’ve also included illustrative examples on stylish his & hers engagement outfits. (Psst! The images of example engagement outfits are pinnable, so if you find them pinteresting, please pin away!)

  1.  Avoid trendy clothes. Avoid overly trendy clothes, which may be in style this season, but will look out of place and dated just one or two years later. Instead, go for tried and true classics that are timeless, like an A-line dress, a maxi dress, a pencil skirt and sweater, or your favorite jeans and a cute top. The same rule goes for accessories. Very big, door-knocker earrings may be in style for one season, but will quickly look dated.
  2. Wear patterns in moderation. Patterns are pretty but in small doses. For example, if you’re wearing a patterned dress, he can wear a neutral shirt (just stay away from beige that too closely matches your skin tone). Too many patterns will detract from the focus of the engagement session: the two of you flirting and having fun because you’re about to get married!
  3.  Don’t be too matchy-matchy. Coordinate with him, but do it subtly. For example, instead of both wearing the exact shade of blue as the main color in both of your engagement session clothes, wear colors that complement each other or colors that are in that same color family. An easy way to build both of your engagement outfits is to choose the main color in your outfit, and he can put together his outfit with that color in mind.
  4. Level up. Do match each other in how dressed up you both are. For example, if you’re in your best dress, make sure that he’s smartly dressed, too, and not in casual jeans, tee-shirt and sneakers.
  5. If weather permits, wear layers! Layering is a great way to add depth and interest to your engagement session outfits. Plus, it’s a bonus that you can pull on/off a sweater, cardigan or a blazer and easily change your look without doing a complete outfit change.
  6. Dress for the season and your surroundings. For example, if it’s winter and you opt for your engagement location to be on a hiking trail, a sweater, or a dress and leather boots will look great, but a sleeveless short dress and stilettos may look out of place.
  7. No logos. Stay away from clothes that have logos on them. Your engagement session should not look like a clothing brand commercial and we are not trying to endorse any brands.
  8.  Be you and be comfortable. Most importantly, wear clothes that you feel comfortable in because it will be easier to feel natural in front of the camera. If you’re wearing clothes that are definitely your style, then you’ll feel great in it, and it will show through in the pictures. If you feel uncomfortable because your clothes are too tight, or you don’t feel like yourself, you will look uncomfortable in your engagement photos. When in doubt, KISS! (Keep it sweet and simple.) Choose the outfits from your existing wardrobe. If you go shopping specifically for an engagement outfit, wear that outfit for a day to take it for a test run. Check if it wrinkles easily or rides up, etc.

Here are some his & hers engagement outfits with these eight tips in mind. These engagement outfits are in various locations: the beach, the city, woodsy locations, and gardens. The couples’ outfits are in varying degrees of formality, depending on the look that you are going for. Hopefully, you will get some wardrobe inspiration and create an outfit that matches your personality and style for your upcoming engagement session.San Diego Engagement Wedding Photographer Sunset Cliffs © Kristine Marie PhotographySunset Cliffs San Diego Engagement Wedding PhotographerWhat to wear for your engagement session | San Diego engagement photographer
