Lia + Hossein are Engaged to be Married! | Proposal at Windandsea Beach, La Jolla

X Marks the spot. I studied the little map and triple checked that I was aiming in the right location. I checked my watch, fiddled with my camera, and acted like a tourist. Soon, a couple holding hands, walked by me. I recognized them from the photograph. I was at Windandsea beach in La Jolla to photograph one of the most romantic moments in someone’s lifetime– a surprise marriage proposal.

I was thrilled when Hossein told me his plans to surprise Lia, his girlfriend of four years with a romantic proposal at Windandsea Beach in La Jolla, CA.  We only had a couple of days to plan it, but the entire surprise proposal on the beach went perfectly. The sun was setting in the horizon. The waves were crashing soundly. The beach was peaceful…

It couldn’t have been more perfect, and the whole time, Lia had no idea that Hossein arranged for me to capture the proposal on camera. Hossein even drew me a map of where exactly he planned to fall to one knee and propose to Lia. We had a Plan A and Plan B, just in case the area by the hut was crowded. 🙂

It was beautiful to witness the surprise proposal at Windandsea beach… a place they both loved and enjoyed. Hossein thought it was fitting to propose at Windandsea Beach because this is where they often took walks together when they used to live in La Jolla.

Lia and Hossein met while they were going to college. Lia was an undergrad at UCSD and Hossein was in grad school at SDSU. Like the best types of relationships, they started off as friends and became close right before Hossein moved back to New York after finishing grad school at SDSU. They maintained their friendship despite the distance from coast to coast.

Lia said, “During that time when he was away, we would talk quite a bit and become closer and closer. A few months after he left, he moved back to San Diego and we started dating. He claims that I was the main reason he moved back, but at the time he didn’t tell me!”  

Windandsea beach is one of their favorite places and Lia said that she remembers all of the wonderful memories they spent exploring the city together. They would walk hand-in-hand on the beach, just as they did right before Hossein dropped to one knee, presented her with a stunning solitaire diamond ring,  and proposed to her.

Below are photos of the surprise proposal at Windandsea Beach in La Jolla. After the proposal, we took some romantic engagement pictures during sunset. I am so happy for this beautiful couple! I have never been so happy for a couple that I just met. I’m elated that I was able to capture their excitement, genuine happiness and affection in photographs.

I stayed hidden until Hossein pointed to my hiding place and explained that he had arranged for a professional photographer to capture the entire proposal on camera. Lia had no idea that Hossein was planning to propose…let alone that I was photographing the proposal!

As I took this picture of Lia, Hossein calls out to his fiance, “Do you know how lucky I am right now?” (KEEPER!)

I asked Lia what she was most excited about, and she simply said, “the future… The idea of us spending our lives together itself is unbelievably exciting. But of course, the idea of building a family together is also in the back of our minds.”

Towards the end of our engagement session, Lia and Hossein braved the waves and got in the water. How awesome are these two?
